His television career began with guest appearances on shows including Highlander and University Hospital, plus parts in the television movies A Family Divided and The Call of the Wild before his casting in his breakthrough role as Daniel Jackson in Stargate SG-1.
Shanks also played archaeologist Dr. Daniel Jackson on Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe as Stargate Films The Ark of Truth and Continuum for which he won the 2009 Leo Award for Lead Performance by a Male in a Feature Length Drama.
He has also appeared in Andromeda, 24, Burn Notice, Eureka, Sanctuary, Smallville as well as Supernatural.
He was the lead role in the SciFi Channel’s adventure film, The Lost Treasure of the Grand Canyon along with Shannen Doherty and the disaster film Arctic Blast.
Recently Michael has been in the Netflix series Altered Carbon and The Good Doctor.

Stargate is a science fiction franchise based on the film directed by Roland Emmerich, which he co-wrote with producer Dean Devlin. It is based around the idea of an alien Einstein–Rosen bridge device (the Stargate) that enables nearly instantaneous travel across the stars. Beginning with the film Stargate, released on October 28, 1994. It was followed in 1997, Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner who created a television series called Stargate SG-1 as a sequel to the film which ran for 10 series. This was joined by Stargate Atlantis in 2004, Stargate Universe in 2009, and a prequel web series, Stargate Origins, in 2018. There are also two direct-to-DVD movies Stargate: Children of the Gods, Stargate: The Ark of Truth, and Stargate: Continuum.
